Closely on the heel of the rescue of 43 migrant labourers of Balangir district from brick kilns of Andhra Pradesh has now come a report of the rescue of a minor, Kailas Nayak, of Bargarh district from a brick kiln at Ukhuragaon in Abbarpur district of Uttar Pradesh
Kailas Nayak of Angulpadachari village in Jharbandh block of Bargarh district had migrated with his father Babulal Nayak and his brothers and sister to work in the brick kiln in Uttar Pradesh through a local Sardar (labour contractor), Sitaram Naya, in 2011. However on reaching there, the brick kiln owner did not provide him the promised wage, saying that the payment has already been made to the Sardar.
In March this year, Babulal lodged a complaint with the local police in UP, following which four members of his family, he, his wife, a son and daughter, were freed from the brick kiln owner’s clutch. However, Kailas was held back being not allowed to go with his parents
Meanwhile, Babulal Nayak appealed to the District Labour Officer (DLO) of Bargarh and the Jharbandh police to rescue Kailas. A complaint was filed with the DLO and at the police station. Finally, Action Aid, an international NGO, sent one of its officials to rescue the detained minor. With cooperation from the UP police and local sub-divisional officials of UP, Kailas was rescued from the brick kiln, informed coordinator of the bonded labour project of Action Aid in Balangir Murali Charan Das.
