Lack of will power on the part of the BJD Government has resulted in the Lower Suktel stalemate and the Government’s bragging as to providing irrigation facility to 35 per cent agricultural land in the State has come a cropper, said PCC media cell chief Narasingh Mishra.
In a statement released here on Tuesday, Mishra said in the backdrop of only three per cent of agricultural land in Balangir district covered by irrigation, arrest of the peaceful agitators who are demanding implementation of the project, is totally unconstitutional and undemocratic.
Criticising the police action, Mishra said a re-estimate for the project cost was made two years back at Rs 1,100 crore whereas the cost was Rs 272 crore when the foundation for the project was laid by the Congress Government in 1999. Even then, the Government has been behaving indifferently which may further push the cost.
Mishra demanded immediate release of the agitators as also immediate measures to pay compensation to the affected people in accordance with the new R&R policy and start the project work. He warned the Government of grave consequences if the demands are not met early.
