A baby male elephant aged one and a half years was found dead in the agriculture field of a farmer of village Dabalang in Subarnapur district, 70 km from here, on Friday.

According to sources, when three elephants were coming towards the village, the calf slipped from an elevated side of the land. The other elephants tried to make the baby stand and walk again.

However, as the calf could not stand and resume walk, the male elephant of the herd in a fit of rage trampled it, said a Forest Department official. “We noticed injury marks in the calf’s head and other parts of its body,” he said.

The sources said 30 elephants were recently found in the Barpahad reserve forest in Subarnapur district. With the calf’s death, the number has come down to 29.

The moot question, however, is how an unusual incident of a baby elephant becoming too weak to walk occurred, knowledgeable circles wondered.
