The Odisha Government has claimed that the State houses as many as 40 Royal Bengal tigers and 318 leopards.
The tiger census report of the State Government which was made public on Wednesday rejected the report of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), which had put the number of big cats at 28 in the State.
As per the report, Similipal reserve is home to 26 tigers alone, while three are in Karnjia Forest Division, two in Satkosia Tiger Reserve and three are in Keonjhar Wildlife Division. Four big cats were enumerated in Sunabeda Wildlife Division and one each in Khariar and Sundargarh. Of the total 40, there are 13 male, 24 female tigers and three cubs.
The estimation also found that there are 318 leopards in the State. The State Forests and Environment Department’s Wildlife wing had used over 20,000 pug impression pads (PIPs) and installed 448 trap cameras to conduct the enumeration between February and April this year.
Notably, the State Government had decided to conduct tiger census on its own after the NTCA put the figure of tiger population at 28 in Odisha in its All India Tiger Estimation Report, 2014 published last year sparking a controversy.
