WORKERS NOT PAID WAGE SINCE AUG

The non-payment of wages to the labourers under the
Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) would go against the
spirit of the scheme and even trigger a distress migration in Balangir
district, said an NGO activist.
The MGNREGS was implemented in India to provide job
work to the poor to ensure their livelihoods by providing job work and prompt
payment of wage to labourers within15 days. However, according to reports,
MGNREGA outstanding wage payment of labourers of Muribahal block since August
stands at Rs1 crore.
“In the last three-four years, we told wage seeking
labourers and other vulnerable people not to go for migration as work would be
available here at their nearest village/ panchayat level through MGNREGA.
And in the lean period in the district, which
starts from July to September, job works were provided to labourers and
migration declined from our area,” the NGO activist said. However, he said,
this year since August wage payment has been stopped. As a result, the
labourers are in a tight situation.
The outstanding wage of a labour family has reached
Rs9,000.Those who have worked in group, the amount is much more, he informed.
This is not only the situation in Muibahal block. The same situation prevails
in all other blocks of the district. The nonpayment of wage is due to Centre
not releasing the MGNREGA money to the State. Meanwhile, the nonpayment of wage
has spread disappointment among the labourers and they are planning to migrate.
