With the reported deadline of March 31, 2013, given by the Centre to the State Government to complete the Lower Suktel Irrigation Project nearing fast, there is apprehension about the fate of the project as work on it is yet to begin.
The Central Government may give more time for this project, informed RDC Northern Division Kishore Chandra Barik in an informal chat with mediapersons after holding a meeting with members of the Balangir Citizens’ Committee, the Lower Suktel Action Committee and affected villagers here on Tuesday.
Asked to comment on the reported deadline, the RDC hinted that more time may be given. Project work can be taken up even in rainy season, he said.
Barik said nobody at the meeting opposed the project. Rather Balangir being a no-industry district, everybody was in favour of the project. “I will instruct the district-level officials to visit the area and expedite various works, including socioeconomic survey.” he said further.
“We discussed with the RDC different points and demanded that the displaced families be given compensation as per the prevailing market rate,” said Srikara Mishra of the Lower Suktel Action Committee. Besides, a proposal to include a sub-canal from the right main canal was also discussed, and once completed it would provide irrigation to10 gram panchyats, he added.
“The RDC assured us to hold frequent review meetings on the project to expedite it. Since the valuation of property was done on the basis of survey carried out seven years ago and as the market rate has gone up in the meanwhile, we demanded compensation as per the prevailing market rate to which the RDC agreed. He said he would send the proposal to the Government for its approval,” said president of Samajwadi Party Balangir unit president Arun Mishra.
