Protesting the irregular water supply, low voltage and load shedding in Balangir town, residents under the banner of Balangir District Citizen Action Committee on Wednesday staged a dharna before the PHED executive engineer’s office and WESCO office.
“We demand uninterrupted water and electricity supply to the town and restoration of the public utility services that have virtually collapsed here,” said Promod Mishra of Balangir District Citizen Action Committee.
Earlier, we had intimated about our problems to the district administration but it took no action to solve them. So, we are staging the dharna. We also condemn the apathetic attitude of the local MLA and MP, Mishra added and threatened to intensify the agitation if the problems were not solved soon. “We may gherao the MP and MLA,” Mishra disclosed.
“We thought that this summer we would be able to provide water to the scarce areas at least once in every alternate day. But due to many reasons, including break down in power supply, we are giving water in those areas once in every three days. However, once the water supply project from the Tel river near Tarbha in Sonepur district is completed, the water crisis would be solved, said PHED executive engineer Bhakta Kab Das.
“The electricity shortage in the town is being felt during the peak hours mainly due to less supply of power to the town. Against the requirement of 48MW during the peak hours, we are getting around 34-36MW resulting in load shedding of a minimum of two hours in the morning and one and a half hours in the evening.
A major reason of electricity shortfall is extreme fall in hydro power generation,” said WESCO executive engineer Yogesh Chandra Patra. Unless hydropower generations increase, the situation is not likely to improve in the future, Patra added.
